The building itself dates back to the 18th century and was built in the typical style of a Mallorcan finca – with thick stone walls, high ceilings, and large wooden doors that keep the interior pleasantly cool in summer. At first glance, the façade of the house is truly impressive: the light sandstone used in its construction shimmers in warm shades of yellow and ochre depending on the light. Above the large entrance gate, you can still see the family crest of those who once lived here. It’s immediately clear that Els Calderers was not just a farmhouse, but the home of a wealthy landowning family that valued both style and tradition.   Inside, the house reveals its full charm: the rooms are furnished with original furniture, old paintings, heavy wooden chests, and handwoven carpets. Particularly striking is the large dining hall, where the long wooden table still stands – the same one where the family and their guests used to gather. Next to it is a rustic kitchen with copper pots, a stone oven, and an open fireplace that still works today. What fascinated me most was how Els Calderers manages to make everyday life from centuries past come alive. It feels as if the residents had just stepped out for a moment. These striking figures, known as the Osborne Bulls (Toro de Osborne), are far more than advertising signs – they have become a symbol of Spain itself.   Originally, the large Osborne bulls were created in the 1950s as advertisements for Osborne’s “Veterano” brandy. The traditional Spanish company Osborne – one of Andalusia’s oldest wine houses – erected more than 500 of these monumental metal figures across the country. Each bull stood about 14 meters tall and originally bore the brand name. After a law change in the 1990s banned roadside advertising, the lettering had to be removed – but the bulls themselves were allowed to remain. What is meant by “Occupation” / “Okupación” in Mallorca?   The term “Okupación” generally refers to a residential property — house, apartment, or even a vacant commercial building — being taken over without the owner’s consent (or without a valid rental/lease agreement) by people who are not legally authorized to use it. In Mallorca, and Spain in general, two main types are distinguished: Allanamiento de morada (breaking into a home), when it concerns an occupied property: this refers to entering or occupying a home or house, considered the “residence” of the owner or lawful user, without permission. Usurpación (unlawful appropriation) — when, for example, a vacant property, unused house, or building not used as a permanent residence is taken over by third parties. On Mallorca, owners and neighbors increasingly report cases where properties, especially vacant houses or apartments, are used by so-called “okupas” — often negatively impacting the owners and/or surrounding neighborhood. 2. Why does this happen in Mallorca? Some reasons and conditions that play a role in Mallorca: Many properties are vacant at times (holiday homes, second homes, investment properties). Vacancies make it easier for unauthorized occupation. The property and rental market is tight, making it attractive for some to occupy vacant properties without permission.
