With shorter days and cooler nights, Mallorca suddenly becomes spooky. Halloween has long since become a must on the island’s autumn calendar and is celebrated with great enthusiasm.   In many places – especially in Palma – bars and nightclubs are transformed into small stages of horror.   Els Calderers – A Living Testament to Mallorcan History     The Els Calderers Estate   When you enter the Els Calderers estate, you immediately get the feeling of stepping back in time. This historic manor house is located in the heart of Mallorca, surrounded by fields, olive trees, and old stone walls that have stood for centuries. The building itself dates back to the 18th century and was built in the typical style of a Mallorcan finca – with thick stone walls, high ceilings, and large wooden doors that keep the interior pleasantly cool in summer. At first glance, the façade of the house is truly impressive: the light sandstone used in its construction shimmers in warm shades of yellow and ochre depending on the light. Above the large entrance gate, you can still see the family crest of those who once lived here. It’s immediately clear that Els Calderers was not just a farmhouse, but the home of a wealthy landowning family that valued both style and tradition.   Inside, the house reveals its full charm: the rooms are furnished with original furniture, old paintings, heavy wooden chests, and handwoven carpets. Particularly striking is the large dining hall, where the long wooden table still stands – the same one where the family and their guests used to gather. Next to it is a rustic kitchen with copper pots, a stone oven, and an open fireplace that still works today. What fascinated me most was how Els Calderers manages to make everyday life from centuries past come alive. It feels as if the residents had just stepped out for a moment. The air carries the scent of wood, aged leather, and something reminiscent of wine and olives. Every room tells its own story – from the music room with its old instruments to the bedroom with its heavy canopy bed. The inner courtyard is also typical of a Mallorcan country house: a small fountain trickles in the center, surrounded by plants that provide shade. In the past, this was the heart of daily life – where people worked, ate, and celebrated together. Today, it’s a peaceful place where you can easily imagine what life on a finca was like more than two hundred years ago. The entire Els Calderers estate is a true piece of Mallorcan history. It vividly shows how closely people were once connected to nature – they lived off the land, cared for their animals, and preserved traditions that remain alive on the island to this day.

The Black Osborne Bulls – Spain’s Silent Landmarks by the Roadside       Anyone driving through Spain will recognize them instantly: the huge black bull silhouettes that stand proudly on hillsides and along country roads. These striking figures, known as the Osborne Bulls (Toro de Osborne), are far more than advertising signs – they have become a symbol of Spain itself.   Originally, the large Osborne bulls were created in the 1950s as advertisements for Osborne’s “Veterano” brandy. After a law change in the 1990s banned roadside advertising, the lettering had to be removed – but the bulls themselves were allowed to remain. Today they stand without logos, yet with even greater symbolic power for Spanish culture.   The Osborne Bulls have since become a fixed part of the Spanish landscape – from Andalusia and Castile-La Mancha to Catalonia. What is meant by “Occupation” / “Okupación” in Mallorca?   The term “Okupación” generally refers to a residential property — house, apartment, or even a vacant commercial building — being taken over without the owner’s consent (or without a valid rental/lease agreement) by people who are not legally authorized to use it. In Mallorca, and Spain in general, two main types are distinguished: Allanamiento de morada (breaking into a home), when it concerns an occupied property: this refers to entering or occupying a home or house, considered the “residence” of the owner or lawful user, without permission. Usurpación (unlawful appropriation) — when, for example, a vacant property, unused house, or building not used as a permanent residence is taken over by third parties. On Mallorca, owners and neighbors increasingly report cases where properties, especially vacant houses or apartments, are used by so-called “okupas” — often negatively impacting the owners and/or surrounding neighborhood. 2. Why does this happen in Mallorca? Some reasons and conditions that play a role in Mallorca: Many properties are vacant at times (holiday homes, second homes, investment properties). Vacancies make it easier for unauthorized occupation. The property and rental market is tight, making it attractive for some to occupy vacant properties without permission. Legal and practical obstacles for owners to reclaim property quickly: lengthy procedures, bureaucratic hurdles. For example, “Usurpación” is often not resolved immediately by the police and may require a court order. In some cases, organized structures: in one reported case, neighbors suspected a kind of “mafia” controlling vacant buildings. Political and legal discussion: the Balearic government (Región de Islas Baleares) is considering measures against people convicted of Okupación, e.g., exclusion from rental or housing aid. 3. Legal situation in Mallorca / Spain Key points: Spanish law provides both criminal and civil remedies. For example, the Penal Code (Código Penal) distinguishes between breaking into a home (allanamiento de morada) and unlawful appropriation (usurpación). With the reform of the Ley de Enjuiciamiento Criminal (“LECrim”) in 2025 (≈ Ley Orgánica 1/2025), cases of Okupación or unauthorized use can be handled more quickly via a “juicio rápido” — e.g., a period of approximately 15 days for certain proceedings. In the Balearic Islands (including Mallorca), laws or regulations are planned to exclude people convicted of Okupación from state rental or housing benefits for a certain period. Local police recommend that owners in case of Okupación not act on their own to remove occupants or use force, but instead follow formal procedures: file a report and initiate legal action. What this means specifically for owners: If it is a residence where you live or normally reside (main or holiday home with personal belongings) and someone has entered without permission, it is often considered allanamiento de morada. Police can intervene more quickly in such cases. If the property is vacant, e.g., a commercial property or second home unused for a long period, the term usurpación usually applies — procedures are longer and more complex. The key difference: whether you as the owner regularly use the property and the use is clearly visible, or whether the property was practically “abandoned.” In the latter case, rights are harder to enforce. 4.
